Ok, got the 3080, just waiting for it to get here. How would you compre the 3080 with the fantom.
I actually have a chance to get my old fantom s back. I like the 128 poly on the 3080 as to the 64 on the fantom s.I've had a 3080 and a Fantom S simultaneously. The 3080 doesn't compare, imo: lower quality ROM (32kHz) with lots of recycled JV-samples, only one MFX processor, no COSM effects, no digital outs. 128 poly is nice but really a non-issue for live play or when recording one track at a time.
Mind you, it still sounds very good, Fantom is just tad bit better imo. That's a good deal. I think it's biggest disadvantage when compared to the XV-5050 (it's closest Roland module relative) is that there seems to be a problem getting a computer editor to work with it. It is easy enough to get it to do what you want from the front panel, but if this is a big deal to you I hope I didn't steer you wrong. It's also missing the COSM effects blocks. But it's advantages to me outweigh this by a lot.
Easy front panel editing, twice the polyphony, and the ability to take both types of Roland expansion boards.I like my Fantom S too, which is of course a different animal. But I've set up identical sounds on both it and an XP (which is actually a generation back from the XV) with the same waveforms, filters, envelopes, and effects, (and Master off!) and the only difference is a very slight boost in the low bass. The Fantom's Master effects section colors everything, which certainly has the potential to make it a brighter axe. And some of it's newer waveforms (like the acoustic piano and guitar waves) are cleaner and brighter. It's all in the sound category you're comparing.
